1. Pick a good name, purchase a domain name (you may want to consider purchasing a used domain name)
2. Figure out who will host your website. Web hosts such as Webfaction allow you to have a website hosted in minutes. Using Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, etc. The key is to find a reliable Reliable Web Hosting provider. You can’t visit a website thats down.
3. Decide what features your website needs to have. Do you need a simple Business Card website? Or do you need an eCommerce website so that you can sell stuff online?
4. Decide on your look and websites look and feel. Hire a website designer or find a free website template that fits your needs
5. Publish content on your website

Getting an internet presence is pretty easy. Getting one that people actually know about is a little bit harder. Thats where Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and a good online marketing strategy come into play.
